Wasted food is the largest component sent to landfills in the United States. Once in landfills, the food waste decays into methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which has been linked to climate change. Americans waste nearly 40 percent of the food we produce while one in six Americans does not know where there next meal is coming from. EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge works with businesses, educational institutions, and other organizations to divert wholesome food to hunger relief organizations and food scraps to composting.
