The Conference for Food Protection is a non-profit organization which originated in 1971. It was created to provide a formal process whereby members of industry, regulatory, academia, consumer and professional organizations are afforded equal input in the development and/or modification of Food Safety Guidance. The Conference for Food Protection brings together representatives from the food industry, government, academia, and consumer organizations to identify and address emerging problems of food safety and to formulate recommendations. Such guidance is incorporated into food safety laws and regulations at all levels of government throughout the United States. The Conference created Food Recovery Guidelines in 2000, and updated the guidelines most recently in April 2016, with contributions from the Food Recovery Committee including members from food industry, nonprofit food recovery organizations represented by Feeding America, academia, and federal agencies.
