There is a LOT of confusion about establishing Share Tables in National School Meal programs but there doesn’t have to be. It’s common sense: unopened, unserved food should never go into the trash when it’s still safe to consume because a) food conservation is a respectful approach to how much energy it takes to produce those items, 2) throwing good food away in the face of childhood hunger is not something we want to advocate as a society, and 3) teaching towards food conservation is a resonating message that reaches across political party lines and into our grandparents generation of “save everything you can.”
